Eryka Trzewik-Drost
Born on November 19, 1931. Polish visual artist, designer of industrial patterns made of ceramics and glass, as well as unique glass. In 1951 she began her studies at the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Wrocław. In 1957, after defending her diploma under the direction of Stanisław Dawski, she started working at the Bogucice Porcelain Factory in Katowice, where for seven years she was a designer of functional ceramics. She designed, among others, coffee services maintained in the modern New Look aesthetics (Epos, Luna) and examples of small chamber sculpture (m.in. The First Ball). In 1966 she started working at the Design Centre of the Ząbkowice Glassworks, where she worked together with her husband Jan Sylwester Drost for 40 years. Together they reformed Polish pressed glass, raising it to the rank of an object of high artistic value. In the seventies of the twentieth century, they were among the European leaders in this field. When designing pressed glass, the artist paid special attention to the decoration of products in which she used floral and rustic motifs. She experimented with the texture of the material in order to obtain new optical effects, m.in contrasting ground surfaces with porous ones. An example are the plates from the Sun and Tracer set, which received a gold medal at the II Triennial of Glass and Porcelain in Jablonec nad Nisou in 1976. Using the experience gained in designing ceramics, she created a small glass sculpture (Maiden, Family, Mexican candlestick). She also designed free-form unique glass. The artist's works can be found in the collections of the National Museum in Warsaw, the National Museum in Krakow, the National Museum in Poznań, the National Museum in Wrocław, the Museum of Contemporary Glass in Sosnowiec, the Karkonosze Museum in Jelenia Góra, the Museum in Gliwice, the Musée du Verre in Liège and the Museum für Industrie-Design in Berlin.
